Second battle of the Masurian Lakes (or Winter Battle in Masuria)

Start of the Second battle of the Masurian Lakes. This is part of an ambitious joint German and Austrian offensive designed to conquer Russian Poland. The Germans are to attack south from East Prussia, the Austrians north in Galicia, in the hope that the two armies could join up east of Warsaw. The German high command didn't hold out much hope for the overall campaign, but did believe that they could defeat the Russian Tenth Army, which was on German soil east of the Masurian Lakes.

The German attack begins on 7 February when the right wing of the Eighth Army, on the right of the German lines, attacks towards Lyck.
