Fox Armoured Car

The Fox Armoured Car was a Canadian version of the British Humber Armoured car, armed with Browning machine guns instead of the BESA guns of the British vehicle.

The Fox was produced by General Motors of Canada. It was armed with one .50in (12.7mm) Browning and one .30in (7.62mm) Browning machine gun. It had the same chassis shape as the Humber Mk III, with a sloped front, large angular mud guards, a fighting compartment with faceted armour and a similar turret.

A total of 1,506 Fox armoured cars were produced, most of which were sent to Britain. They were mainly used for training and home defence duties, freeing up the Humber for combat units. However some were sent to Italy where they were used by Italian troops, while others were used by the Canadians in France in 1944, taking part in the fighting around Caen, Falaise and the Scheldt estuary.

Mk I

The Fox Mk I was based on the Humber Mk III and had a similar three man turret. 200 of them were built.

Mk II

The Fox Mk II was based on the Humber Mk IV which was armed with an American 37mm gun. This version was used by the Dutch after the Second World War, serving in the Dutch East Indies.

Fox SP

The Fox Self Propelled Artillery carrier was armed with a 6-pounder gun in a box light hull which was taller at the front than the back. It was based on the Fox Mk. I.
