StuG III Ausf D

The Sturmgeschütz III Ausf D was very similar to the previous StuG III Ausf C. The Ausf D was produced with face-hardened armour, and a signal bell was installed to allow the commander to get the attention of the driver. A number of Ausf Ds were built with an armoured pannier on the right hand side, in addition to the standard pannier on the left, to make the space for them to be used as command vehicles. The Ausf D was used to replace the 105 losses suffered in 1941, and to form new detachments, amongst them Abt z b v 288 (Detachment for Special Employment 288), which took three to North Africa early in 1942.
