Battle of the Somme : Battle of Flers-Courcelette

First day of the battle of Flers-Courcelette, the first full scale British offensive on the Somme since the first day of the battle. The British hope to break the German lines north-east of Flers and get into the German rear areas.

On 15 September XIV Corps attacked on the right, but quickly gets bogged down. XV in the centre did better but still failed to achieve a breakthrough. This attack included fourteen tanks, making it the first tank attack of the war. III Corps, next in line also makes some progress. On the far left the Canadian Corps captures the village of Courcelette.

The day sees the combat debut of the Mk.I Tank.

Seventh Battle of the Isonzo

Second day of the Seventh Battle of the Isonzo, the first of three short offensives on the Isonzo Front in the autumn of 1916.

Austrian troops recapture most of the ground lost to the Italians on the first day of the battle.
