German attempt to relieve Stalingrad ends in failure

Russian offensive on the Middle Don ends.

As a result of the two Soviet offensives the Italian VIII, Romanian III and Hungarian II Armies are defeated and Army Groups Don and A are in danger of being cut off, a danger greatly increased by Hitler's refusal to allow any retreat.

War in the Air

Eighth Air Force Heavy Bomber Mission No. 27: 77 aircraft dispatched to attack U-boat base at Lorient. 40 aircraft attack the target, three aircraft are lost. Brings total of heavy bombers lost on operations in 1942 to 30.
