38cm RW61 auf Sturmmörser Tiger/ Tiger-Mörser

The Tiger-Mörser or Sturmmörser was a self propelled armoured mount for the breach loading rocket firing 38cm Raketenwerfer 61 L/54. The vehicle had been developed after a German army request for a self-propelled 21cm howitzer had floundered when it was discovered that no suitable howitzer existed. It was based on the chassis of the Tiger I, with a fighting compartment build over the front of the tank.

The Raketenwerfer had been developed as a naval anti-submarine weapon. It had a range of 4,600m, and the Tiger-Mörser could carry twelve shells in racks and one in the barrel. A small crane was mounted at the rear of the superstructure, to help load the heavy shells.

Only a very small number of Tiger-Mörsers were constructed – either 10 or 18 – and were used to equip Sturmmörser Companies 1001, 1002 and 1003. These units found in the final defensive battles in Germany in 1944-45.
