The Amiot 355 was a member of the Amiot 351/354 family that was to be powered by 1,030hp Gnôme & Rhône 14P engines as part of an attempt to use as many different types of engines as possible to speed up production of the entire family of aircraft. The Amiot 355 does not appear to have been ordered into production, but despite this the twelfth production aircraft from the Amiot production line was selected to serve as the prototype for the Amiot 355, and was given two 1,200 Gnôme & Rhône 14R2/3 supercharged radial engines. In June 1940 it was being prepared for its flight tests at Le Bourget airfield near Paris when the Germans threatened the airfield. The prototype was already flight capable, and was flown to Pau, and then to Clermont-Ferrand, where it was placed in storage.
