The battle of Towton marked the end of the first phase of resistance to Edward IV. His army destroyed the Lancastrian army of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou, although both escaped. Fought in a driving blizzard, Towton was one of the bloodiest battle of the Wars of the Roses, and the Lancastrian faction was almost destroyed in the battle.
