HMS Pheonix listing before sinking

Here we see the Acheron class destroyer HMS Pheonix listing after she was torpedoed by the Austro-Hungarian submarine SM U-27 on 14 May 1918. Attempts were made to tow her to port in Albania, but they failed and she capsized within sight of land.

This picture comes from the collection of the Australian War Memorial, and is in the public domain.
