USS Benham (DD-397) carrying survivors from Yorktown
Here we see the Benham class destroyer USS Benham (DD-397) carrying 270 survivors from the carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5), probably after she was abandoned on 4 June 1942 after being badly damaged and taking on a heavy list during the battle of Midway. The Yorktown can be seen in the background. When this picture was taken the Benham was attempting to transfer the survivors to the cruiser USS Portland (CA-33) but the attempt had to be abandoned.
