The initial British, Spanish, Portuguese and French positions before the battle of Albuera. Marshal Beresford, commanding the Allied forces, expected the French under Marshal Soult to attack the centre of the Allied line at Albuera, where the hills were lowest, but Soult believed that the Spanish had not yet reached the battlefield and so decided to attack around the Allied right wing, hoping to cut the Allied army in half by preventing Blake from reaching Albuera.
