General Hermann von Eichhorn, command of the German occupation forces in Western Russia and Ukraine, is murdered by a left wing revolutionary, becoming the highest ranked German officer to be killed during the First World War. His main task in Ukraine had been to extract as much grain as possible and this had made him increasingly unpopular. His murderer also wanted to end the limited cooperation between Germany and the Bolsheviks.
