War at Sea

Admiral Scheer brings a somewhat reduced German fleet out to sea. Admiral John Jellicoe responds by bringing the Grand Fleet out, but neither side takes the risks that might have produced a major battle. Two British crusiers are lost to submarines and Jellicoe decides not to respond to every German move in the future, believing that the slim chance of a battle doesn't justify the losses.

The loses include HMS Nottingham which was hit by two torpedoes from U 52 just before 6am and a third around 6.25am, sinking ten minutes later. Only 38 men were lost. U 52 had been spotted by HMS Dublin before the attack, but not identified as a threat.

The second loss was HMS Falmouth.
