A Turkish army under Kress von Kressenstein attempts to get within artillery range of the Suez Canal. In order to achieve this the Turks have to capture a defended ridge east of the canal, given then name Wellington Ridge by the British.
On 3 August the Turks attempted to follow a British cavalry patrol into the main lines, but instead are held up all day by the 1st Australian Light Horse.
