Sixth battle of the Isonzo

Start of the two day long artillery bombardment that marks the start of the sixth battle of the Isonzo.

Battle of the Somme: Battle of Pozieres Ridge

2nd Australian Division pushes the Germans out of their second line trenches north and east of Pozieres village and forces the front line back a few hundred yards north-west of the village. To the north-east the crest of the ridge is reached, allowed Australian troops to look down towards the village of Courcelette, the target of the second main offensive on the Somme.

Battle of Romani

The Turks attempt to attack Wellington Ridge, a British defensive position east of the Suez Canal. The attack fails all along the line, but the British fail to take full advantage of the Turkish defeat and don't launch a counterattack until the following day.

War at Sea

Cruiser HMS Cleopatra hits a mine, but isn't too badly damaged.
