Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien decides to pull back two miles, towards the edge of Ypres, to create a more defensible front line. On 27 April he is ordered to hand command of his troops over to General Herbert Plumer, commander of V Corps. Smith-Dorrien remains in command of the Second Army until 6 May. Plumer is soon forced to carry out the same retreat.
