Allied troops land at Gallipoli. Early chances for success are missed and the Turks (with German help) quickly form a strong defensive line. The battle soon settles into a costly stalemate.
The landings are supported by a sizable fleet, including HMS Cornwallis and HMS Goliath. HMS Albion supports the landings at the tip of the peninsula. HMS Sapphire and HMS Amethyst form part of the Fourth Squadron, along with minesweppers, supporting the failed attack on Y-Beach.
The battleships HMS Queen, HMS London and HMS Prince of Wales transport 1,500 men from the Australian 3rd Brigade to their beaches.
