Images of the Past: Fishing Industry, Jon Sutherland & Diane Canwell

This entry in the Images of the Past series looks at the British fishing industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book is split into four chapters, with the first giving an overview of fishing towns around the coast, the second focusing on St Ives in 1923 and the third on the North Sea.

Very few of the pictures are directly relevant to military history. Even the fourth chapter entitled 'Wartime and Personal Memories' contains very few wartime pictures. Having said that, British fishermen and their boats served in vast numbers in the Royal Navy in both World Wars, carrying out a wide range of dangerous front line duties. Many of the pictures are thus indirectly relevant.
