Confederate Artillery Organizations: An Alphabetical Listing of the Officers and Batteries of the Confederacy 1861-1865, F. Ray Sibley Jr

This book is based on a very rare late 19th century reference work, and is an alphabetical listing of all known artillery units to serve in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. For each unit we get a list of commanders, the dates of their service, and some notes about most of these individuals, with most detail coming in the extensive footnotes (thankfully actually placed on the page for a change!). These contain some interesting snippets, although there isn’t the space for much more.

This is probably the easiest review I’ve had to write for some time. If you need the information contained in this book for your own research, then it will be utterly invaluable. If you aren’t involved in fairly detailed research into the Confederate Army of the Civil War, then it will be of little or no interest. It’s an excellent reference work, but a very specialised one!
