Germany and the Great War: Western Front First Year - Neuve Chapelle - First Ypres - Loos, Joshua Bilton

This book contains an impressive collection of photographs showing a wide range of the German experience during 1915. The title is very misleading. Only one of the six chapters actually looks at the Western Front, and the three named British battles don’t really feature. In fact this book looks at the experiences of Germany on all fronts during 1915, with some pictures showing the Austrio-Hungarians and Ottomans.

For me this rather improves the value of the book. We get an impressive array of photographs, which include the familiar pictures from the trenches, but also vertigo inducing pictures of alpine soldiers in the mountains, unfamiliar views from the German home front, pictures showing the very different nature of the fighting on the Eastern Front and in Africa, and pictures of the German fleet.

This is a good selection of photographs giving the German view of the fighting in 1915, a year of some progress in the east and a defensive posture in the west.
