A superb book on a little known subject. The Phoenix programme in Vietnam has almost passed into legend and has long been a mentioned in hushed whispers in many action films including Lethal Weapon, but few know what the programme actually was. Andrade’s book, which is one of very few on the subject, details the Phoenix counterinsurgency programme in Vietnam, a radical program that was possibly the most effective US tactic during the war, but also one of the most radical bringing accusations of an assassination program. The book includes photographs, some statistical evidence and organisation charts. It makes very interesting reading in the light of the Western Coalition’s efforts against insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq.
