Ancient Warfare Magazine: Volume III Issue 2: Alexander's Funeral GamesThis issue looks at one of the more intensive periods of warfare in the ancient world – the wars that followed the death of Alexander the Great, when for forty years his generals and their children squabbled for power, hoping to inherit all or part of Alexander's empire. The volume starts with an historical overview of the wars, and has a good mix of general (fortifications and tactics) and specific articles (Demetrius Poliorcetes and Gabiene).
My personal favourite is the article on Philon of Byzantium, and the theory and practise of Hellenistic fortifications, which overlaps with my own area of academic expertise, and reveals just how sophisticated ancient fortifications could be.
As with the first issue we reviewed there is a good mix of illustrations, including some good photographs of surviving ancient fortifications, busts and contemporary artefacts. The article on the Imperial mariner discovered at Herculaneum is particularly well supported with photographs of every aspect of the equipment discovered.
Overall this is an interesting selection of well written articles.
