Vickers Wellington in the Far East

The Vickers Wellington served in the Far East theatre between 1942 and 1944. It first entered service in India as a bomber, forming part of N. 225 Group. No. 99 and No. 215 squadrons used the Mk IX, then Mk X, attacking Japanese positions in Burma. Their first raid was made by No. 215 Squadron on 23 April 1942. During the Imphal crisis in mid 1944 the Wellington was used both to bomb Japanese airfields and supply dumps, and to ferry bombs from the supply depots to the Hurricane fighter bomber squadrons. The Wellington also served in the anti-submarine role in the Far East, with No. 36 Squadron, starting operations in October 1942.

Wellington in Action, Ron Mackay. A well illustrated guide to the development and service career of this classic British bomber. Mackay looks at the early development of the Wellington and the unusual geodetic frame that gave it great strength, the period when the Wellington was the mainstay of Bomber Command and the many uses found for the aircraft after it was replaced in the main bomber stream.
