The Curtiss XA-4 was a single A-3 attack aircraft modified to test the 440hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engine. It was produced by fitting a Pratt & Whitney R-1340-1 to A-3 no.27-244. The resulting aircraft was 364lb lighter than the A-3B, had a higher service ceiling, but a slightly lower top speed of 137.4mph (two less than the A-3B). The XA-4 was delivered to the Army in December 1927, and survived until March 1942 when it was scraped after only 327 flying hours.
