Bishop's War, First (1639)

Brief conflict between Charles I of England and the Scots, caused by Charles's attempt to impose the English liturgy on the Scots in response to which the Scots abolished Bishops in the Scottish church. The Scots seized Edinburgh Castle, but the war was ended without serious fighting by the Peace of Berwick (18 June 1639), in which Charles made some concessions to the Scots, although he was unwilling to allow the abolition of the Bishops.
