John Campbell, second duke of Argylle (1678-1743)

Entered the army in 1694, aged sixteen. During the War of the Spanish Succession he served in Flanders (1702, and 1706-9), and an Spain (1711), before moving to Scotland in 1712. During his time in Flanders he formed a hostile relationship with the duke of Marlborough. One of the chief supporters of George I in 1714, he played a key part in the defeat of the First Jacobite Revolt (the 15), stopping the earl of Mar at Sheriffmuir, although in 1716 he was replaced by the earl of Cadogan. The rest of his career was largely political, although he was made a field marshal in 1736.
