Skirmish at Hatchie Bridge, 5 October 1862

Skirmish in the aftermath of the Battle of Corinth (3-4 October 1862). The Confederate army that had been attacking Corinth had been forced to retreat on the afternoon of 4 October after failing to capture the town. Retreated to the west, they almost stumbled over a Union force under General Ord that was on its way to Corinth. Ord managed to prevent Van Dorn’s force from taking its preferred crossing over the Hatchie River, and for a brief period the Confederate force was in danger of being trapped between Ord and the pursuit from Corinth. However, another route across the river was found in time, and Van Dorn and Price were able to escape to the south.
