History

The 87th Fighter Group was a short lived replacement training unit for P-47s.

The group was constituted as the 87th Fighter Group on 24 September 1943 and activated on 1 October 1943. It was part of the First Air Force, in the American north-east, and was used to train replacement pilots for P-47 units.

The group was disbanded on 10 April 1944, as part of a wider restructuring of training that saw the existing training groups and squadrons disbanded and replaced by Army Air Forces Base Units.
