The 476th Fighter Group (USAAF) was briefly activated with no squadrons in China, before being activated for a second time as a home based training unit.
The group was constituted as the 476th Fighter Group on 20 April 1943. It was assigned to the Fourteenth Air Force in China, and the group itself was activated there on 19 May 1943. However it never received any squadrons, and was disbanded on 31 July 1943.
The group was constituted for the second time on 11 October 1943 and activated on 1 December 1943. It was assigned to the First Air Force in the US North East, and was based at Richmond, Virginia. The group was to used as a replacement training unit, and received its complement of four training squadrons, but they don't appear to become operational and no aircraft are recorded for them.
In 1944 the USAAF reorganised its training system, replacing the existing groups and squadrons with AAF Base Units, each assigned to a particular air field. The 476th was moved to Pocatello, Idaho, just before this change took place, where it appears to have formed the basis of the 265th Army Air Force Base Unit, a fighter training unit.
