No. 628 Squadron (RAF): Second World War

Aircraft - Locations - Group and Duty - Books

No.628 Squadron was formed as a special duties squadron but spent most of its brief existence flying a mix of meteorological flights and air-sea rescue missions in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

The squadron was formed at Redhills Lake, Madras, on 21 March 1944 and was equipped with the Catalina. It was formed to carry out special duties missions, especially along the long Burmese coast where the Catalinas could be used to drop agents or supplies. The squadron never really got involved in this role and instead was used on meteorological flights and air-sea rescue duties, operating over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. The squadron was disbanded on 1 October 1944.
