Tenryu Class Cruiser from the Left

Tenryu Class Cruiser from the Left
Here we see a Tenryu Class cruiser, showing its origins as an enlarged version of a typical First World War destroyer. This shows in particular in the small bridge structure, the large number of funnels, and the location of the main guns, with one in front and one behind each of the masts. The two ships in the class were laid down in 1917, completed in 1919 and both were sunk during the Second World War - Tenryu in 1942 and Tatsuta in 1944.
