Survivors from USS Langley (CV-1) on USS Whipple (DD-217)
Here we see survivors from the carrier USS Langley (CV-1) on the deck of the Clemson class destroyer USS Whipple (DD-217). The Langley was badly damaged by Japanese aircraft on 27 February 1942 and had to be scuttled. Most of her crew were rescued, but were then killed or captured when the destroyer USS Edsall (DD-219) and oiler USS Pecos (AO-6) were both sunk before reaching safety.
