'Sniffer' magnetic runway clearer
This picture shows a simple solution to the problem of metal fragments on a runway - the 'sniffer' was a magnetic railway sleeper that was towed along the runway, sweeping up bits of fragmentation bombs and other metal debris to prevent damage to aircraft types. A late model Vickers Wellington can be seen in the background.
