General Simon Boliver Buckner Jr on Okinawa
General Simon Boliver Buckner Jr (left of the picture), commander of the US 10th Army on Okinawa, was the joint-highest ranked American officer to be killed in action during the Second World War. He was killed by a fragment of coral blasted off by an artillery shell on 18 June 1945, soon after this picture was taken.
