Shikishima before 1904

Shikishima before 1904
Here we see the British built Japanese battleship Shikishima early in her career, probably before 1904 and possibly before she left British waters. The Shikishima was a typical pre-dreadnought battleship of her period, armed with four 12in guns in twin turrets fore and aft and fourteen 6in guns in casemates. Six of the starboard 6in guns can easily be picked out here - four on the lower level and two level with the main guns. Also note the eight-ray Rising Sun ensign at the top of the foremast - a similar flat is used by the modern Japanese Self Defense Forces.
