These plans show the Pennsylvania armoured cruisers of 1901-1902, which were much larger than earlier American armoured cruisers, but too lightly armed for their size, with four 8in guns in twin turrets and fourteen 16in guns on two levels. When first built they were named after US states (as show here), but betewen 1912 and 1920 all six were renamed, to allow the state names to be re-used on battleships.
