Plans of Devonshire Class First Class Armoured Cruisers
These plans show the Devonshire class of first class armoured cruisers, improved versions of the previous Monmouth class. Both were more lightly armed than the standard armoured cruisers of the period, in an attempt to make them cheaper and thus allow them to be produced in larger numbers. The Monmouth class had carried fourteen 6in guns, four in twin turrets and ten in single turrets. The Devonshire class were originally designed with two 7.5in guns replacing the twin 6in turrets forward and aft. During construction the forward double-deck 6in casemates giving them four 7.5in guns, three fore and one aft, and six 6in guns, three on each side. Two were carried in the double-deck casemates aft and one in a casemate amidships.
