Morane Saulnier MS.406 from the left
Here we see a Morane Saulnier MS.406 in flight. This was the most numerous French fighter in 1940, and would probably have coped perfectly well if the Germans had invaded in 1939, but progress was rapid, and it was already becoming outclassed by 1940, lacking the speed, armour or firepower to compete on equal terms against the latest Bf 109E.
