Monte Cassino from the air, 1944
This aerial photograph shows Monte Cassino and Cassino town just before the start of the Fourth battle of Cassino. At this point Allied troops held part of the town and most of the mountains to the right of the valley in shadow, while the Germans held the rest of the town, the Monastery ruins on top of the mountain and the western slopes. Note the many shell holes scattered across the valley floor.
