Here we see a Junkers Ju 88A-5 that fell into British hands on 26 November 1941 after its crew from Kustenflieger 106 became disorientated after a sortie over the Irish Sea and landed at Chivenor in Devon believing they had already reached France. The aircraft was given the British serial number HM 509, and joined No.1426 (Enemy Aircraft Circus) Flight at Collyweston, Northamptonshire. The unit carried out a series of tours of operational stations giving flying demonstrations of enemy aircraft. This picture was taken at Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, which was then being used by the USAAF. The main visual difference between the Ju 88A-1 and Ju 88A-5 was the inset ailerons used on the A-5, which can be seen clearly here ending just just of the wing, leaving an entirely fixed wing tip.
