HMS Ribble from the left

This view of the River class destroyer HMS Ribble shows the original layout of the River class ships, with the guns on either side of the bridge carried in low sponsons, with part of the forecastle cut away to allow them to fire forwards. This position was later found to be very wet, and the sponsons were raised on later ships. We can also see the new bridge structure adopted on the River class ships, with the bridge itself one level higher than on the 30 knotters, placing it above the forward gun, instead of sharing the same platform.
