Grumman Wildcats over HMS Pursuer

Grumman Wildcats over HMS Pursuer

Here we see a formation of Grumman Wildcats flying over the escort carrier HMS Pursuer at some point in the summer of 1944. During this period the Pursuer was a busy ship, supporting the D-Day landings then moving to the Mediterranean to take part in Operation Dragoon.

If these aircraft came from the Pursuer then they are from probably from No.881 Naval Air Squadron, the only unit serving on the carrier when she deployed to the Mediterranean to support Operation Dragoon and the picture was published at about the right time for that to be the case.
