Pipelayer HMS Latimer during Operation PLUTO
Here we see the pipe layer HMS Latimer as she approached the south coast of England while laying the first cross-Channel fuel pipeline, part of Operation PLUTO (PipeLine Under The Ocean). This saw a series of underwater fuel pipes laid between Britain and France, although they never quite lived up to expectations, and the bulk of fuel still crossed the Channel in tankers.
