Evacuees returning home, HMS Empress, 1944

Here we see a group of boy evacuees being returned to the UK on the Ruler Class escort carrier HMS Empress. The officer is Lieutenant G. White, RNR, who had been appointed as 'foster father' for this dormitory. It isn't clear when this picture was taken - the IWM date says April 1944, but the Empress was occupied against targets in Norwegian waters in that month. In April 1945 she was in the Far East. This may date to her original voyage from the US to the UK.
