HMS Bayntun was a Captain class frigate, part of a large group of ships ordered in the United States, where they were originally designated as British Destroyer Escorts (BDE). She was part of what became the Evarts class in US service, which used diesel-electric engines designed for use in submarines. The Bayntun had the US designation BDE-1, and was one of the first six destroyer escorts to be transfered to the Royal Navy. Many of the ships ordered by Britain were taken over by the US Navy after the American entry into the war, but 78 reached British hands.
