HMAS Voyager run aground, 1942

Here we see the W class destroyer HMAS Voyager soon after she had run aground at Betano on Portuguese Timor. She ran aground while disembarking a force of commandos on 23 September 1942. Attempts to refloat her failed and she was spotted by Japanese aircraft. On 24 September she was bombed by more Japanese aircraft. She was judged to be beyond repair, and she was scuttled by her crew, who were rescued on 25 September.

This picture comes from the collection of the Australian War Memorial, and is in the public domain.
