French Zouaves, c.1914
The Zouaves of 1914 were mainly conscripts raised from the French colonists of Algeria and Tunisia, but they retained much of their high morale, and their colourful uniforms. This picture was taken either early in the fighting in 1914 or before the outbreak of the First World War, as they soon had to adopt a khaki uniform to avoid very heavy losses.
