Damaged Bridges over the Arno, Florenc
Although Kesselring claimed to have preserved the historical city of Florence by ordering his men not to fight in the city, he also ordered five of the six bridges over the Arno in the city destroyed. In the foreground we see the Ponte Santa Trinita, a sixteenth century masterpiece and the oldest elliptic arch bridge in the world, at least before Kesselring had it destroyed. In the background is the surviving Ponte Vecchio, with the Medieval buildings on his approaches destroyed.
