First Curtiss Model F, 1913
Here we see Lt John H Towers and Godfrey de Chevalier in the first Curtiss Model F of 1913. Note the upper wing extensions supported by a strut attached to the lower wing. These were removed in the Model F of 1914. Towers served as Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics in 1939-42 and commanded Carrier Task Groups during the Second World War. Godfrey de Chevalier made the first landing on the new carrier USS Langley(CV-1) on 26 October 1922, but was fatally injured in a crash on 12 November 1922 and died two days later.
