Here we see the second Curtiss JN-3, army serial no.53, being prepared for a scouting mission at Casas Grandes, during General Pershing's Punitive Expedition to Mexico, hunting for Pancho Villa after his attack on Columbus, New Mexico, earlier in the year. The pilot, in the rear cockpit, is Lt C.G. Chapman. The JN-3 had unequal span wings, and the rounded tip of the lower wing can be seen here. The king posts above the upper wing struts, which later made the JN-4 an excellent machine for wing walkers, are also clearly visible.
This aircraft was condemned at Columbus, New Mexico, in the Spring of 1916.
